Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a rescued-chimpanzee sanctuary in rainforest in Sierra Leone’s Western Area Forest Reserve, outside Freetown. A visit is a guided walk on forest paths, so plan your transport and arrival around a booked tour rather than an open-ended visit.
- Setting: Western Area Forest Reserve.
- From Freetown: about 40 minutes by vehicle from the city’s western side.
- Visit format: guided tours take approximately one hour and run at scheduled times.
- Booking: advance reservations are recommended; groups larger than five must reserve ahead.
Where is Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary?

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is in rainforest within the Western Area Forest Reserve, about 40 minutes by vehicle from Freetown’s western side. The sanctuary’s location on a hillside shapes the final part of the journey, while its forest setting is central to the visit.
The sanctuary was established in 1995 by Bala Amarasekaran. It provides a safe, natural haven for rescued chimpanzees following stages of rehabilitation; sightings are not guaranteed, and the sanctuary puts the animals’ welfare first.
How do you get from Freetown to Tacugama?

You can hire a car or taxi in Freetown, or take public transport to Regent and hire a taxi from there to the sanctuary on Congo Dam Access Road. The route includes a 2-kilometre dirt road up the mountain before a steep hill, so confirm your driver can manage the approach.
Four-wheel drive is needed for the hill. If your vehicle cannot make that final climb, you can be dropped off or park at the base and walk approximately 100 metres uphill to the entrance. A forest walking trail runs beside the hill.
For a broader day in the city, you can pair your planning with a one-day Freetown itinerary from Aberdeen, keeping the sanctuary’s scheduled tour and journey in mind.
How do Tacugama tours and bookings work?

Tacugama visits take place only during scheduled guided tour times, and each tour lasts approximately one hour. Four tour slots run daily: 10:30–11:30, 12:00–13:00, 14:00–15:00 and 15:30–16:30. Tour schedules can change, so check the official site before you go.
Tours start promptly. Arrive 30 minutes before your selected time; late arrivals cannot be accommodated. Advance booking is recommended because tours fill quickly. Groups larger than five people must reserve by email at reception@tacugama.com or by phone or WhatsApp at (+232/0) 31 77 77 77.
Tour prices are Le 100 for adults and Le 50 for children with Sierra Leonean ID, and Le 350 for adults and Le 150 for children for other visitors. The child rate applies only to children aged 5–11. Because prices and schedules are time-sensitive, confirm the details with the sanctuary before setting out.
Payment can be made by Orange Money or cash on site. Card payments depend on a stable internet connection and may be declined, so carrying cash is recommended. For cash payments in foreign currency, only US-dollar or euro bills of 50 or higher are accepted.
What should you know about the forest visit?

Tours follow forest footpaths on foot, so wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Bring rain gear during the rainy season. Allow for the uphill walk if your vehicle stops at the base of the hill.
Guided forest hikes leave daily at 9:00 and 13:00, last 1.5–3 hours depending on the trail, and require at least two people to book in advance. Contact the sanctuary to confirm current arrangements if you are considering a hike instead of, or in addition to, a chimpanzee tour.
